Globe Data Plan 1799 versus Smart Data Plan 2000

The Plans

Mid-level data plans. Both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications now offer smartphones friendly data plans. We will compare two plans, which would be ideal for those whose bills for combined data and phone usage will not be exceeding Php2,500 a month. At Php2,500 a month or better, there are better plan options from both carriers.

Globe Data 1799. For Php1,799 a month Globe will give you:

- Unlimited data
- Php800 consumable
- Three free add-ons

Converting this to minutes and selecting three add-ons, you would get the following:

- Unlimited Data
- 130 minutes of calls (50% Globe network/50% to other carriers and landlines)
- 200 free SMS withing the Globe network
- 50 free SMS to other networks
- Unlimited calls and text to one Globe/TM number

Globe Plan 1799 is Php201 cheaper than Smarts offering so if you consume Php2,000 it could looks more like this:

- Unlimited Data
- 157 minutes of calls (50% Globe network/50% to other carriers and landlines)
- 200 free SMS withing the Globe network
- 50 free SMS to other networks
- Unlimited calls and text to one Globe/TM number

Globe charges Php6.50 per minute for Globe to Globe/TM calls, Php7.50 for other local calls (mobile or landline) and Php1.00 per SMS.

Smart Data Plan 2000. Smart offering at Plan 2000 Data is as follows:

- Unlimited data
- 150 minutes of calls to all networks
- 200 SMS to all networks

Over and above the free calls and SMS Smart charges Php5.09 for calls made to within the Smart network, Php6.11 for calls made about the Smart network and Php0.51 for SMS to all networks.
Which plan is better? The two plans have distinct advantages so it is hard to really compare the two. How much value do you place on Globe unlimited calls and text to one number. If you call one number a lot it could really save you a lot of money.

But in general Globe plan favors those who spend most of their time calling and texting people on the Globe network. Smarts plans is more network neutral.

The hardware

The best phone offered by Globe Telecom for free (with a two year lock-in) at Data Plan 1799 is the Apple iPhone 3GS, which is still a competent phone today. With a 3.5-inch (320 x 480) screen, 600Mhz processor, 256MB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory upgradeable to the latest iOS5 it is a fine phone.
Smart Communications does offer more current hardware. At Plan 2000 the best phone Smart offers is the HTC Sensation which is an Android phone with a 4.3-inch (540 x 960) screen, 1.2GHz dual core processor, 768MB of RAM, 9GB of storage expandable to 33GB and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This phone is really more the equivalent of a iPhone 4S than a iPhone 3GS.

If you want a smaller phone they also have the 3.7-inch HTC Desire S, but that really is more on par with an iPhone 4. Get the Sensation.

On the hardware category, Smart simply has better options. Hopefully Globe brings down some of their more interesting phones like, the Google Nexus S to Data Plan 1799 or maybe the 8GB iPhone 4.

  1. hi there!

i'm considering the 1799+200 globe iphone 4s plan versus the 12,500 cash out + 1500 smart plan.

the net cash out difference is 500 php. 48k for globe and 48.5k for smart. almost the same, but with globe, you get to have time value of money.

anyways, i just wanna ask, which data plan is faster?? that's going to be my deciding factor.

  2. Which data plan is faster depends on location, but I have used both, and neither one is consistently fast everywhere. But I have also seen speeds in excess of 2 Mbps from both.

Between Smart Data 1500 and Globe Plan 1799, I like Globe Plans better. Smarts plan has so few SMS built in you will likely always go above Php1,500 a month.

  3. SmartUnlimited Data Plan has a CAP of 1.5GB, DL speed goes SLOW once exceeded.

Globe does not put a Bandwith CAP for their Mobile postpaid subscriber, Fair usage policy only applied to Tatto and prepeaid plans.

I switched to SMART and I am regretting it.

  4. So far I have never experienced a slowdown but I am not sure O have ever gone beyond the cap. In my case I prefer the cap since it give the service provider some way to control network congestion. It looks like providers are backing off from caps though.
